MEET YOUR FACULTY AT GUILDFORD
Campus Dean and Associate Professor
Sarah studied for the CPE and Law Society Finals at The University of Law in London. She trained and qualified as a solicitor at Slaughter and May and worked in financial regulation until she moved into legal education. Sarah teaches Ethics and Professional Legal Practice and Equity and Trusts on the GDL as well as Business Law and Debt Finance on the LPC. She is the Chair of the Ethics Committee at ULaw and was made an Associate Professor in 2015.
Associate Professor and Academic Manager
Helen is a qualified solicitor with experience in large commercial firm DWF and small high street firms. She has a BSc in Geology with physics from Kings College and, after a career in the oil industry, requalified as a solicitor in 1994. Helen’s early teaching career included work for Ilex Tutorial College and Oxford Brookes Universities. She has drawn on her experiences in business and private client to teach on the LPC, GDL and LLB.
Senior Tutor and Academic Manager
Carolyn has an LLB (Hons) from the University of the West of England. She studied for the LPC at The University of Law in Guildford. She trained and qualified as a solicitor at Fulchers. Carolyn then worked for Staffurth & Bray and became a partner. She joined the University in 2001 and teaches Ethics and Professional Legal Practice and Crime on the GDL. She also teaches Crime and Actions on the LLB and Dispute Resolution and Commercial Dispute Resolution on the LPC.
GDL & LLB Programme & Student Lead and Associate Professor
Anne Rodell is the GDL and LLB Programme and Student Lead for the Guildford Campus. Anne studied for the CPE and Law Society Finals at the Chancery Lane branch of the University (then College) of Law. She trained and qualified as a solicitor at Linklaters and worked in commercial property. Anne teaches EU Law on the LLB and GDL as well as Real Estate on the LPC. Anne has been involved in course design and was made an Associate Professor in 2010.
Teaching Fellow and LPC Programme and Student Lead
Debbie is responsible for the delivery of the LPC across Guildford and Reading. She has an LLB (Hons) from the University of Bristol and completed the Law Society Finals at The University of Law in Guildford. She trained and qualified as a solicitor at Herbert Smith then worked in commercial real estate. Debbie then worked at TWM in Guildford, before joining ULaw as a tutor in 2008. She teaches Real Estate and Advanced Real Estate on the LPC and Land on both the LLB and GDL.
Sarah started her legal career as an articled clerk and solicitor at Allen & Overy in London. She joined ULaw in 1994 as a litigation specialist. She teaches on all key courses run by the University including the LPC, GDL and LLB. Sarah is also a specialist advocacy trainer on the PSC. Sarah has served as an external examiner to the Law Society of Ireland. Sarah was appointed as a fee-paid judge in 2013 and currently sits regularly in the First-tier Tribunal.
Anne was admitted as a solicitor in March 1991. She spent the first few years of her legal career at Charles Russell, before joining a specialist family and crime practice. Since joining the University she's spent many years at LNTV involved in post qualification training for Solicitors mainly in family and crime but also private client, professional practice and property. She is a qualified family mediator and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Melanie Williams is a Senior Tutor at the Guildford Campus. She obtained an LLB (Hons) from Brunel University and attended ULaw to complete her Law Society Finals. After training with Collyer-Bristow, Melanie qualified as a solicitor and worked in the Manchester branch of Alsop Wilkinson (now DLA Piper). Melanie specialises in company law and delivers modules on the LPC, GDL and LLB. She was voted ULaw’s first Teacher of the Year award in 2016.
Helen studied law at the University of Cambridge and has an MA. Having completed her vocational training at The University of Law, she qualified as a solicitor and worked in practice as an in-house lawyer, dealing with private client work. She is currently a senior lecturer at the University and, since joining in 1993, has taught on the LPC, GDL, LLB and PSC, with her main interests being Trusts, Tax and Private Client Work.
Cathryn Glover is a senior lecturer at the University of Law and has over 20 years' experience in postgraduate legal education. She has taught across a wide range of the University's programmes and currently teaches on the LLB, GDL and LLM LPC. She has a particular interest in dispute resolution, contract law and employment law. In practice she worked as an assistant solicitor in the litigation department of a regional firm.
Sue is a Senior Lecturer at The University of Law working at the Guildford Campus, having started work at the Bloomsbury Campus in 1995. Prior to this, she trained and worked as a solicitor at Wilde Sapte (now Dentons) in London, specialising in Property Finance. She teaches Law of Organisations on the LLB as well as Real Estate, Insolvency, Tax, Accounts and Public Companies Law and Practice on the LPC.
Dan has a B.A. (Joint Hons) in History & Politics from the University of Leicester. He studied the CPE at Nottingham Law School part-time whilst working as a Paralegal. He then studied the LPC at the ULaw in Guildford. He trained and qualified as a solicitor at Berryman & Co Solicitors, working in litigation. He joined ULaw in 2003. Dan teaches Public Law on the GDL; Public, Immigration & Employment Law on the LLB, and Dispute Resolution and Immigration Law on the LPC.
Bill is a generalist, having worked principally in high street firms following completion of his GDL at the University of Sussex and the LPC at the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice. His prime areas of interest are constitutional, business and employment law. In previous lives he worked as an operations manager in the electronic printing industry, overseas sailing holiday resort manager and a commissioned officer in the army.
Senior Tutor, Bar Liaison Tutor and LLB Course Leader
Helen studied BA Geology at Oxford University and undertook a PGCE at the Westminster Institute of Education in Oxford. She attained a GDL Distinction at City University and BVC at the Inns of Court School of Law. Helen was called to the Bar at Middle Temple in 2007 and now teaches GDL Contract Law, EU law and Ethics, LLB Legal Essentials and LPC Dispute Resolution. She also runs a mooting competition and a Crown Court mock trial event.
Senior Tutor and LPC Part-time Day Course Leader
Jackie studied for the LPC at the Guildford Campus of The University of Law. She trained and qualified as a solicitor at Baldocks (now incorporated with Charles Russell) and Butler Sharp & Co. Jackie then worked for AWB Solicitors (now DH Stallard) before joining the University in 2007. Jackie teaches Land on both the GDL and LLB. She also teaches Family, Real Estate and Advanced Real Estate on the LPC. Jackie is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Suzanne has an LLB (Hons) from the University of Cardiff. She studied for the Law Society Finals at ULaw in Guildford and was admitted as a solicitor in 1989. She trained at Eversheds in London where she worked in Commercial Litigation before moving to DLA Piper’s City office. Suzanne then wrote for a legal publisher before moving into legal education in 2007. Suzanne teaches Dispute Resolution, Commercial and CDR on the LPC, Contract on the GDL and Transactions on the LLB.
Heather Greenwood is a Senior Lecturer at Guildford. She has an LLB (Hons) from the University of Exeter, and studied for the Law Society Finals at the then College of Law, Guildford. She trained and qualified as a solicitor at SJ Berwin & Co, specialising in commercial property. She currently teaches Contract Law and Equity & Trusts on the undergraduate LLB degree course and on the GDL. She has also taught a wide range of subjects on the LPC.
Katherine Wagg is a tutor at the Guildford Campus. She has an LLB (Hons) from Liverpool John Moores University and studied the LPC at the The University of Law Guildford Campus before training and qualifying as a solicitor. Katherine practiced in Dispute Resolution in both small and medium sized law firms before making the move to teaching. She teaches Civil and Criminal Litigation and Commercial Law on the LPC and Tort Law on the GDL/
Ruth Rutter is a senior tutor at the Guildford Campus. She obtained an LLB (Hons) from the University of Wales then attended the Guildford Campus of ULaw to complete her Law Society Finals. Ruth qualified as a solicitor in 1990 and spent two years working for Clyde & Co. Ruth has specialised in Tort Law and Medical Law & Ethics and was Programme Lead for the LLB. Ruth teaches across all the University programmes.
Senior Tutor and LPC Part-time Weekend Course Leader
Tamzin Twohy is a senior tutor at the Guildford Campus. Tamzin graduated from Oxford University with a BA and completed the LPC at the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice. She trained at Slaughter and May and went on to join Eversheds in Leeds. After leaving private practice, Tamzin joined the ULaw and was made a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has taught on the LPC (Business Law and Practice, Equity Finance and Banking), GDL (EU Law) and LLM courses.
Sarah has a LLB (Hons) from Kingston University and obtained a distinction on the LPC at the University (then College) of Law at Guildford. She went on to train and qualify at Cowans Solicitors LLP. More recently she held the position of Managing Partner of the firm. Sarah remains in practice on a part-time basis and specialises in Criminal Defence. As a Tutor at the University, Sarah teaches a wide range of subjects on the LPC.
Laura is a Tutor at the Guildford Campus. Laura has a Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) from Kingston University. Having changed course she then went on to study the Graduate Diploma in Law at our Bloomsbury Campus and the Legal Practice Course at the Guildford Campus before training and qualifying as a solicitor. Before moving into legal education Laura practiced in Property and Wills & Probate. Laura teaches Real Estate on the Legal Practice Course.
Alice graduated from The University of Hull with a 1st Class Law Degree. She then undertook a PGCE at Oxford Brookes University. In 2013 she obtained a Distinction on the LPC. She trained and qualified as a solicitor at Blandy & Blandy LLP. Since qualification she has specialised in Family Law, representing clients in a wide variety of areas. Alice joined the University in 2018 and teaches Dispute Resolution and Family Law on the LPC and Criminal Law on the LLB.
Nick graduated from Exeter University with an LLB (Hons) and took his CPS and Law Society Finals at the College of Law before joining Bird & Bird in London, where he trained and qualified as a solicitor. Nick then moved to Southampton, where he further developed his career as a litigator, becoming a full partner/business owner. Nick teaches Business Law & Practice and Commercial Law on the LPC and Contract law on the LLB law course.
Debbie has a LLB (Hons) from Solent University and studied the LPC at the University (then College) of Law at Guildford. Following the LPC, Debbie worked as a commercial property lawyer with Trethowans and Coffin Mew and went on to train and qualify at Clarke & Son Solicitors in Basingstoke. Debbie then moved to take up a position practising in Property at Churchers solicitors. As a tutor at ULaw, she teaches Real Estate and Advanced Real Estate on the LPC.
Max is a tutor at the Guildford Campus. He obtained a First-Class LLB (Hons) from the University of Warwick and went on to study the BPTC at Kaplan Law School. He subsequently trained and qualified as a Barrister at 1 Chancery Lane Chambers. Whilst in practice, Max regularly attended Court to represent claimants/defendants in small claim hearings, fast track trials, interim applications, disposal hearings and case management conferences. He is a Lincoln’s Inn Scholar.
