Real World Lectures- Does Activism work? Virtual Event, Undergraduate

This lecture looks at LGBT activism from Thatcher-Era to the present day. We consider how politicians and the tabloid press have used their power to oppress marginalised groups and the various ways in which ordinary people have accomplished extraordinary things in the pursuit of equality. We assess methods different LGBT activist groups have used to lobby the government for political change and the challenges they faced along the way. Taking a journey through pivotal moments such as the miners’ strikes, the HIV/AIDS crisis, section 28 and the fight for marriage equality, this talk explains how unlikely allegiances formed and explores the balance (and imbalance) of power between politicians and the people who became a driving force in bringing about change. This lecture is aimed at year 12 and 13 students considering studying Law, Criminology or Politics at university. Please note if you are under 16, you will be contacted a week before the event to provide guardian/parental consent to attend.
