Resits

The information on this page is applicable to all University of Law students except for apprentices.

To complete your course and be awarded your qualification (if applicable), you’ll normally need to pass all of your assessments.

If you fail an assessment, you will have the opportunity to resit it as long as you have not already exhausted the maximum number of attempts permitted at that assessment. Where an assessment is made up of multiple elements (e.g. an exam and a coursework), you may need to resit all elements or only the elements that you have failed, as stipulated by your transcript and the Assessment Regulations for your course.

If you have been granted an additional attempt at an assessment (e.g. 1b, 2b, 2c, 3b etc.), you will need to take your additional attempt at a resit point. This is because all students who need to take an assessment after their first attempt (1a) sitting has taken place must do so at a resit opportunity. Additional attempts are therefore treated as resits for the purposes of registration.

It's important that you consult the Assessment Regulations for your course to find out the timeframe during which you are required to sit any outstanding assessments. Some courses may require you to take all (or, in certain circumstances, a minimum number) of your resit(s) and/or additional attempt(s) at the first available opportunity. For other courses, you may be able to take your resit(s) and/or additional attempt(s) at any available opportunity provided that you complete these assessments within the time limit of your course.

There will usually be at least one opportunity for you to resit and/or take an additional attempt at an assessment during the same academic year as your original (1a) attempt (although this varies from course to course). To find out when the next opportunity will take place, you’ll need to refer to the resit registration schedule for your course. You can access this schedule through your ELITE account.

For specific information on the rules and regulations governing your resit(s) and/or additional attempt(s), you should consult the Assessment Regulations for your course together with your Student Handbook and the Explanatory Notes that are published with your results.

Resit fees

The University of Law does not charge fees for resits. You will not pay a fee to resit any of your assessments regardless of whether or not you will be sitting at the next stage of attempt (i.e. 2a or 3a) or at an additional attempt (e.g. 1b, 2b, 2c, 3b etc.).

Undergraduates

Resit Registration

All undergraduate students, except for International Foundation Programme students

Except for in certain circumstances, you will be automatically registered for all of your outstanding resit(s) and/or additional attempt(s) in the compulsory resit period that immediately follows the publication of your end of year results.

If you’re not a current student and/or you’ve finished your course, you may be permitted to take resit(s) and/or additional attempt(s) outside of the compulsory resit period that immediately follows the publication of your end of year results. If this applies to you and you wish to do so, you won’t be automatically registered for that resit or additional attempt. In this instance, it is your responsibility to register for this assessment.

International Foundation Programme students

You won’t be automatically registered for any resits or additional attempts you need to take; it is your responsibility to register for these assessments.

How to register for your resit(s) and/or additional attempts if you will not be automatically registered

You must register for your resit(s) and/or additional attempt(s) by completing and submitting the Undergraduate Resit Application Form (available through your ELITE account). Your form must be received by the resit registration deadline specified in the resit registration schedule for your course. Resit registration deadlines are strictly enforced and late registration is not permitted under any circumstances.

Disability support and inclusion

If you have a University of Law Inclusion Plan (ULIP), formerly known as a Disability Support Agreement (DSA), the agreed provision is normally valid for the period of your course and any subsequent resit periods. If you have a temporary ULIP you will need a new one for any subsequent resit periods.

If you have been diagnosed with a new condition, previously disclosed but not sought support or if you have a ULIP but your condition/needs have changed, please contact the Disability and Inclusion Service as a priority by email at [email protected]. Please note the deadline for assessment adjustments is normally twenty-eight days before the start of your assessment period, otherwise adjustments for that assessment period cannot be guaranteed.

Further information on disability support can be found on the Disability and Inclusion Service page.
