MSc Online

We know what it takes to succeed on the constantly changing global, legal and financial services and compliance arena. Everything we do is geared towards teaching in a professional, practical context so you can enhance your professional skills and career prospects as a modern professional.

Each course will focus on the mix of professional skills required to apply regulations in practice – analysis, drafting and presentation skills, among others – so that you are equipped with the knowledge you will need as you build your international career.

There are three course variations of the MSc Online:

  • MSc Law, Governance, Risk and Compliance
  • MSc Law and Financial Crime Compliance
  • MSc Law and Private Wealth Advice

The first two listed programmes are structured to meet the demands from firms for highly-skilled legal and compliance professionals (covering Anti-Money Laundering/ Counter-Terrorist Financing, Regulatory Compliance, Risk and Legal areas). The link between legal skills and core compliance skills is extensive, and the merging of these areas are purposely designed to develop professionals that are more in line with the modern demands and pressures being encountered in the financial services compliance sector.

The successful completion of a professional, recognised and valuable Master’s degree will enhance your career with a qualification that reflects cutting-edge approaches to international law, regulatory risk, compliance and private wealth advice. You can learn the professional skills required to apply regulations on the global stage in the field of your choice.

Throughout the course you’ll receive online supervision delivered by a professionally qualified faculty of legal experts with international experience, as well as one-to-one tutor support and feedback on your work from a fully-qualified lawyer.

The MSc Online course options we offer are specially designed for students who already hold one of the following diplomas:

  • ICA Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Governance, Risk and Compliance
  • ICA Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Crime Compliance
  • ICA or STEP Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Private Wealth Advising

You must hold one of these qualifications to be eligible for our MSc Online courses.

Please also note that there are two “routes” for this course, depending on your academic background. There is a Law Background route for those who have successfully completed at least a Qualifying Law Degree, and there is a Non-Law Background route for those who have not completed at least a Qualifying Law Degree.

All other requisite criteria still need to be met by anyone wishing to enrol on one of these courses.

Course Structure

The Research Methods module is compulsory in both the Law Background and Non-Law Background routes for any of these MSc awards. You must pass the Research Methods module before commencing studies on the dissertation appropriate to your chosen route.

This module focuses on developing key skills required to complete your dissertation: Research, writing, presentation and analysis

  • Selecting a research topic in the law
  • Defining appropriate research questions
  • Conducting a literature review
  • Conducting research focused around one or more research questions
  • Drafting and presenting a research proposal
  • Critically evaluating research within the law, and reflecting on one’s own development as a researcher

If following the “Non-Law Background” route, you must study one of the Law and Practice listed modules below. You’ll need to complete your study of this module (i.e. submit the Module Assignment and Portfolio Report) before commencing studies on the Professional Practice Dissertation. You can study your Law and Practice module at the same time as taking the Research Methods module.

  • International Intellectual Property Practice
  • International Competition/ Anti-Trust Law and Practice
  • International Joint Ventures Practice
  • International Dispute Resolution
  • International Commercial Law

Please note that if you are coming to study this course from a qualified legal background (i.e. you have successfully completed at least a Qualifying Law Degree) then you will not need to study a Law and Practice module to complete these courses.

For the main dissertation of this course you will produce an analysis of an area of contemporary legal practice and compliance of your choosing, supervised online by a tutor.

Depending on which route you’re following, the word limit for your dissertation will vary.
