In considering formal applications for any of its programmes, the University has a discretion to consider applications for partial exemption from certain subjects or modules through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). This might occur where applicants, as a result of prior learning, can demonstrate that they have achieved the relevant learning outcomes of those subject areas by satisfying relevant criteria.
Similarly, formal exemptions may be granted from modules on our Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) programme for students who can demonstrate that one or more of the required modules have been studied and passed at the relevant level at another institution.
Such applications are separate to a course application and are dealt with by our Eligibility Team. Below is some information on the two areas:
What is the difference?
Exemptions: A successful application for exemption from the study of one or more modules on the GDL means that the applicant may satisfy the requirements of the professional body and therefore the student will not be required to complete the full GDL programme at the University. In these circumstances, the student will only receive a transcript showing the modules studied and passed and will not receive the full award of the GDL.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): A successful application for Recognition of Prior Learning means that subjects where the outcomes have been satisfied through prior learning will not need to be studied within the University’s programme. However, credits for those subjects will be granted and therefore the University’s award will be made on successful completion of the remaining modules.
Exemptions
Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)
The University’s GDL programme will cover all 7 core Foundation Subjects – Public Law, Land Law, Contract Law, European Union Law, Criminal Law, Equity & Trusts, Tort Law as well as Ethics and Professional Practice and another area of law.
Future Solicitors (GDL)
In accordance with the Joint Academic Stage Handbook the University may consider partial exemptions for students wishing to qualify as a Solicitor. Applications for full exemption from the Academic Stage are dealt with by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA).
Future Barrister (GDL)
Students who wish to qualify as a Barrister must apply to the Bar Standards Board (BSB) for both partial and full exemptions.

Cilex (GDL)
If you are a Chartered Legal Executive or Cilex graduate and hold Level 6 qualifications you may wish to apply for partial exemption for the GDL course with us. Full exemption applications are considered by the SRA.
Legal Practice Course (LPC)
Students who have completed a previous Bar Vocational Course (BVC) or Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) and wish to undertake the LPC course at the University may be able to apply to us for Recognised of Prior Learning (not exemption) for that previous study.

For students who have applied to the Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA) for exemptions from aspects of the LPC Stage 1 or Stage 2, these are considered through exemptions only. If exemptions are approved, the University will not give a Final exit award. An applicant will receive a transcript showing the modules undertaken and marks attained.

- Submit an application for the course you wish to study. Within the application you will be given the opportunity to let us know that you intend to apply for exemptions.
- Your application will be reviewed by the Admissions Team, who will follow our normal selection process and release a decision to you
- If you receive an offer of a place and you have indicated on your application that you wish to apply for RPL or exemptions Admissions will also send you an Exemptions application form
- Complete the Exemption application form and return it to the Eligibility team along with any additional documents requested such as a copy of your course syllabus.
- The Eligibility team will assess your Exemptions application and contact you with the outcome.
- If you are happy with what you’ve been offered you will need to let the Eligibility team know and also accept your place on the main course through the offer email send by Admissions.

Recognition of Prior Learning
As mentioned above the main difference for RPL is that if an application is approved, study and assessments are completed and passed, the University will give a Final exit award.
The University does consider RPL for both our Law and Business Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses – e.g. LLB, BA (Hons) GDL, LPC, LLM and MSc (online and on campus).
Applications are made independent to your course applications and are dealt with by the Eligibility Team.
