Preparing for the SQE can feel daunting, especially with so much discussion around difficulty and pass rates. Our focus is on what drives success: expert teaching, innovative learning tools and dedicated student support. On this page, we explain how our students perform in the SQE, how our results compare to national pass rates, and the targeted support that helps students succeed in these assessments.
The SQE isn’t a typical law exam. It’s designed to ensure future solicitors are ready for real-world practice. It tests not only what you know, but how well you can apply that knowledge. Many candidates find it demanding because it blends legal knowledge with practical application.
Despite the challenges, many candidates pass the SQE on their first attempt. Success comes down to preparation, practice and having the right guidance. By combining focused study, practical experience and expert support, studying with us gives you the confidence and skills to succeed.
The SQE1 assessments aim to test your Functioning Legal Knowledge (FLK) - your ability to identify legal principles and apply your knowledge of the law appropriately and effectively to realistic client cases. The SQE1 is split into FLK1 and FLK2, each delivered as a closed-book examination containing 180 single best answer questions (SBAQs). These aren’t simple “one right, a few wrong” choices, all the options are plausible, but you need to choose the most correct answer that best fits the scenario. The syllabus is broad and detailed, requiring a deep understanding of multiple areas of both academic and vocational law. With 180 questions to complete in each assessment, effective time management is crucial - you’ll need to balance speed, precision and confidence.
SQE2 assesses your practical legal skills across five practice areas, evaluating how effectively you apply legal knowledge in day-to-day legal work with accuracy and professionalism. You’ll complete 16 assessments in both written and oral skills. The oral assessments take place over two half-days and cover advocacy and client interviewing and attendance note/legal analysis. The written assessments are completed over three days and include case and matter analysis, legal research, legal writing and legal drafting. SQE2 generally has a higher pass rate, likely reflecting both the strong legal foundation candidates bring from preparing for SQE1 and the fact that only those who have successfully completed SQE1 can progress. Nevertheless, it remains a rigorous test of both understanding and execution, demonstrating your readiness to practise as a solicitor.

Success in the SQE starts with the right support. Our students benefit from comprehensive academic and practical guidance, along with hands-on resources and real-world experience. With access to a wide range of tools, expert teaching and practical learning opportunities, they are equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to excel in the SQE.
Our intelligent SQE Revision App helps students prepare for SQE1 by building legal knowledge, SBAQ technique and confidence. Students get full access to 3,000+ practice SBAQs with automatic feedback and performance insights. With our app, key resources, study materials and revision tools are always at their fingertips, allowing study around any schedule.
Digital versions of our suite of manuals, written specifically for SQE 1 & 2 are included in the course fee, with current students and alumni able to purchase printed copies at a 50% discount. Many students recommend our manuals for their clarity, thorough coverage and practical case studies, helping them prepare effectively for the assessments.
Our students learn from 400+ lecturers who are qualified lawyers with real-world expertise, offering in-depth guidance, group sessions and personalised academic support.
Learn in a simulated law firm environment through our virtual law firm, ULaw LLP. ULaw LLP replicates the working environment of a law firm, enabling students to perform real-world tasks on simulated cases, deals and transactions, as if they were in the office.
There’s been a lot of talk about how hard the SQE can be to pass, with the legal press citing low national pass rates, tough assessments and unfavourable comparisons to the prior solicitor qualification, the Legal Practice Course (LPC). But when you look at the data, our results tell a different story, one of consistent outperformance over national pass rates.
Our students’ SQE pass rates are not just strong, they have been consistently higher than the national pass rates published by the SRA.
SQE1: 75% of our students passed the January 2025 SQE1 assessments at their first attempt, compared to the SRA’s national pass rate of 60%*
SQE2: 86% of our students passed SQE2 in July 2025 compared to the industry average pass rate of 76%**

This section gives you clear, practical answers to the most common questions students have on SQE assessments and pass rates, helping you approach the SQE with confidence and direction.
Focus both on areas you know and those you find challenging. When you get a question wrong, make a note of it and the topic it covers - this helps you identify your weak areas and track your progress. Attempt multiple SBAQs on a single topic, learning from mistakes and gradually increase the difficulty to improve both knowledge and confidence.
Balancing study with work and life can be challenging, so discipline and organisation are essential. Set aside dedicated time for regular, focused practice and timed exercises and try to stick to your study schedule. Use practice questions to simulate real exam conditions and ensure you’re comfortable answering both straightforward and complex SBAQs under pressure.
Your journey is adaptive and personalised. Our SQE app, assessments and summative feedback let you monitor progress in real-time. Lecturers and academic coaches provide guidance and individual feedback, helping you identify strengths, address gaps and build confidence for the exams and real-world practice.
SQE exams are booked directly through the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). The SRA provides all the essential information on registering, booking procedures, exam locations and important dates. You can find full details and register for your exams on the SRA website.
Occasionally, SQE assessments may be affected by factors outside a candidate’s control, such as technical or test-centre issues. The SRA sets out how these situations are handled, including whether an assessment attempt is discounted or rescheduled. For the most up-to-date information, we recommend checking the SRA’s guidance on assessment delivery disruptions.
If you don’t pass first time, for whatever reason, you can retake our short two-day revision SQE Exam Preparation Course for free*, giving you the support and resources to prepare confidently for your next attempt.

Resit pass rates tend to be lower than first-attempt pass rates for both SQE1 and SQE2. This is often because students who resit haven’t fully closed the knowledge or exam-technique gaps from their first attempt. With the right preparation, many candidates do improve their score on a resit.
Our results reflect a combination of expert teaching, practice-focused learning and comprehensive student support. By focusing on assessment technique, practical application and continuous feedback, our students are well-prepared to succeed on the first attempt.
Pass rates show the proportion of students achieving the required standard in a given sitting. They are influenced by cohort size, mix of first-time and resitting candidates and exam difficulty. Our strong pass rates demonstrate that our teaching, practice tools and support help students perform at their best.
Overall national SQE pass rates have varied over time, largely due to differences in candidate cohorts and the difficulty of individual exam sittings. SQE1 has generally had lower pass rates, as it is students' first encounter with the SQE assessments. SQE2 tends to have a higher pass rate, as candidates benefit from having already passed SQE1 and gained experience with the assessments.
The SQE exams are challenging, which has contributed to these fluctuations in national pass rates. That being said, our students’ results have remained consistently above these averages, showing that with the right teaching and exam preparation, passing the exam is achievable.
