What is your favourite memory from your time with us?
My experience at Ulaw was an exceptional and it's hard to get it down to one, however, I was nominated to give the Student Vote of Thanks at my graduation at the Barbican in London. I said yes about half an hour before an exam so I really was not thinking about the number of people who would be there! 1500 people is a lot of people to speak to, however, I felt alive up there and I so enjoyed looking out and knowing my husband and parents were there to cheer me on.
Share a piece of advice from a lecturer or classmate that has stayed with you?
Phyllida Roberts "You are so bright eyed and bushy tailed Sam you can do this"! She shared this when I was feeling like I couldn't make it. She was right and I will forever sing her praises. Lynn Kershaw (I adore her) is exceptional and got me through my dissertation season. She also taught me on how to compose myself in court for difficult cases. Reminding me that for tough cases it is so important to keep composed, she told me to think about something ordinary e.g. What am I having for dinner tonight... hmmm ok so I am having steak, chips and peas etc... It helps to keep you in the moment and be grounded.
What advice would you give to someone starting the course you studied?
There will be days where it can feel overwhelming. Remember to be Grateful, gracious and kind. Grateful for the support you get, the resources that are available and all the staff who are willing and ready to help. Be grateful that you got on the course! Not everyone can be in your position and it is a privilege to be able to study and make a positive difference in the lives of others. Be gracious to everyone (staff, fellow students, cleaners, security etc.). Whether you know it or not you you will impact every one you interact with in some way. Choose to be a force for good. Be Kind. Remember to be kind to yourself! There will be days when you feel like you are failing or where you feel as though it's too tough, you don't have enough time or you will compare yourself with the results of others. Don't do that. Be kind to yourself and then extend that to everyone else.
Tell us something people may be surprised to know about you…
Talking to a large number of people, I feel alive. I do get butterflies in my stomach (of course I do) however, I feel alive and I thoroughly enjoy communicating. What people may not know however, is that I am really much more of a small group person in my private life. When I got married for example, I really did not like the large number of people all staring at me! Context is everything.
