Finding the right place to live whilst studying can be both exciting and daunting, however we’re here to help throughout the process. Our partnership with Studentpad is accessible to all of our students, whether you choose to study at one of our campuses or satellite locations. Below we look at the accommodation available and some of the most important information and advice you’ll need when considering your options.
If you're looking for more information and advice contact our accommodation team.
Studentpad
We’ve partnered with Studentpad, a student accommodation search engine, to help you find somewhere suitable to live whilst you study with us.
Studentpad provides:
- A search facility for purpose built student accommodation (e.g. private halls of residence), student houses, flats and lodgings in your chosen campus city. Once you’ve found some suitable properties you can contact the accommodation provider, landlord or agent for more information or to arrange a viewing.
- Helpful advice on your housing rights and responsibilities.
- The ability to register and receive property alerts.
- A message board where you can find other students at The University of Law to live with.
- Local information for your campus city and helpful hints and tips about student living in the UK.
Once you’ve accepted an offer of a place with us you’ll have full access to Studentpad. However, you’ll need to create an account. Just contact our accommodation team to arrange this.
Finding housemates
If you’d like to find others at The University of Law to privately rent with, or you have a spare room in your house/flat share, join your campus Facebook page and connect with fellow students.
Campus specific accommodation partners
We also arrange a limited amount of accommodation for our new domestic and international students, with some of the UK’s leading student accommodation providers in our major campus cities. You’re eligible to apply once you’ve accepted your offer of a place with us.
The accommodation providers we use in most of our locations can only hold the rooms reserved for our students for a limited time. This means there are certain deadlines to apply and unfortunately we can’t guarantee an offer of a room after this passes. However, our accommodation team will still help you find somewhere to live if you can’t, or don’t want to, book one of our reserved rooms.
What you can expect from the purpose-built student accommodation supplied by our partners:
- All-inclusive bills: Utilities like electricity, water and wi-fi are included in your rent, so there are no unexpected costs.
- Student-focused amenities: Common features include study rooms, communal lounges, laundry and kitchen facilities.
- Wellbeing and security: there will usually be 24/7 security or CCTV and on-site management staff.
- Community: Living alongside fellow students makes it easy to make friends. Our partner providers will also try and ensure you’ll be living with other University of Law students.
Representatives from accommodation providers will often be available for you to speak with at our open days. You’ll be able to find out more about living in student accommodation and perhaps even arrange a tour of the facilities.

FAQs
When should I start looking for accommodation?
We suggest you start looking for a place to live as soon as you’ve decided to study with us. Our Accommodation team can offer advice on what accommodation may be available in the location at which you’ve chosen to study. If you’re interested in any of the rooms we’ve reserved with purpose-built student accommodation providers in the University of Law campus locations then fill out the enquiry form and we can pass your details to the relevant provider – at this stage you won’t be committing yourself to booking with them.
How do I choose the right kind of accommodation?
Consider what matters most to you, where you'd like to live, and what fits your budget.
Here are some things to think about:
- How far is it from your campus?
- What kind of accommodation is it? A room in purpose built student accommodation or a room in a shared flat or house?
- What facilities are there and how many people share them. For example, will you have to share a bathroom? What are the kitchen and living area like?
- What amenities are on site or nearby?
- How much does it cost?
- Are bills included?
- What is the length of the contract and what happens if you can’t/don’t want to stay to the end of the contract?
- Do you have to pay a deposit and/or any rent in advance and if so, how much?
- When are rent payments due?
- Do you need a guarantor?
What is a guarantor and will I need one?
A guarantor agrees to pay a tenant's rent if they don't pay it.
If a tenant does not meet their financial obligations, the guarantor can be pursued for payment. This action may be in addition to, or instead of, pursuing the tenant.
Not all landlords or accommodation providers require a guarantor, but many do. The University of Law cannot act as a guarantor for students, however, if you’re unable to find someone to act as your guarantor then there are organisations that offer this service for a fee, for example:
What is the cost of living in the UK?
It’s important to factor in all your living costs, not just the rent, when looking for somewhere to live.
We have plenty of information about typical living costs and there’s lots of great budgeting advice available at the following websites:

What is council tax and do I have to pay it?
Council tax is collected by local councils to help pay for essential local services such as rubbish collection, libraries and schools. It's a tax on domestic property, but some property is exempt from council tax, and some groups of people don’t have to pay it. Generally speaking, properties in which only full-time students live are exempt from council tax, as are full-time students themselves.
Your landlord may want proof you are a full-time student, and you may need to send proof of your full-time student status to your local council. You can request a Student Status Letter from the University which you can then send to whoever needs to see this. You can do this via the My ULaw app or by emailing [email protected]. Part-time students are not usually exempt from council tax, but if you’re on a low income you may qualify for some help towards paying it through the council tax reduction scheme.
What are my rights and obligations as a tenant?
The University’s Money & Housing Advice team can provide information and advice on your rights and responsibilities as a tenant and what to do if you have problems with your landlord or accommodation provider, for example, if your landlord isn’t undertaking essential repairs.
Studentpad also has helpful information on your housing rights and responsibilities as does the housing charity Shelter.
Can I cancel my accommodation contract?
Your rights will vary according to the type of housing contract you have. For example, purpose-built student accommodation (e.g. halls of residence) may have a short ‘cooling off’ period during which you can cancel your accommodation booking. They may also allow you to cancel your booking if you don’t get the grades to come to the University or you’re not granted a visa.
However, other types of tenancy agreement – such as an agreement with a private landlord to rent a flat or a house shared with other tenants – are unlikely to have a ‘cooling off’ period. You may also be liable for the rent for the whole length of the tenancy agreement, unless the agreement specifically says otherwise or your landlord agrees to release you from the contract early (often on the condition that you find a suitable replacement tenant).
This means you should think very carefully before committing yourself to any accommodation. Take the opportunity to look around the accommodation before agreeing to rent it and fully read any contract before you sign.
For further advice and guidance see the FAQ on your rights and responsibilities as a tenant.
Do I need contents insurance?
We very strongly recommend that you have contents insurance in case your belongings are lost, stolen or damaged. Some accommodation providers may include contents insurance in their rent. Always check if you’re not sure.
