My dream is to build my own fashion brand, Scissorz Xhrist, which will offer tailored African clothing and accessories for Africans living in the diaspora. The idea was inspired by my time at university in Nigeria, where my friends and I launched a clothing line and sold streetwear to other students. It was an exciting experience and made me realise how much I enjoy running a fashion business.
I also aspire to become an established author. My debut novel, Tales of Jideofor, has already been published by Tamarind Hill Press and I dream of publishing more of my works in the UK.
To turn my dreams into reality, I decided to move to England and study MSc Strategic Business Management, hoping that it would help me better understand how to market my books and run my fashion business.
I chose The University of Law for many reasons. I was drawn in by their reputation, their employment promise and the fact that it has one of the largest alumni groups of any UK institution. I also liked how the University has campuses across the UK, as this meant I could study close to my friends, family and acquaintances. Out of all the options, the University offered the best value.
Since coming to the University, I’ve received a lot of support. My academic coach and lecturer, Dr. Lucia Egbe, has been instrumental in my journey so far. I remember reaching out to her when I had to resit the Business Ethics module. She was supportive, easing my fears about how my situation would impact my academic progress.
I also appreciate the efforts of Ms. Sangeeta Ram. She was one of my module lecturers and became my supervisor for my business project. She was very thorough and pushed me to produce the best quality of work. She was also flexible with our meetings and allowed me to pick dates that worked around my personal and work responsibilities.
Mr. Saravjit Singh, or Mr. Saby as he is fondly called, is my favourite lecturer. I appreciate his active involvement in academic programmes and student societies. For example, in my first semester, he participated in a football match between students and lecturers in the Football Society. In my second semester, he invited my class to an event organised by the Entrepreneurship Society. He even connected me with the executives of the Entrepreneurship Society so that they could assist me in reaching out to their members during the Business Society’s campaign for the BizCon2025.
Outside of the University staff, I have greatly appreciated the support of the Student Unio Co-Presidents, Peter Bolaji and Uche Adika, and the Business Society, especially during the business conference at the London Moorgate and Birmingham campuses. As Vice President of the Business Society for the Birmingham campus, I got to meet and collaborate with students in Birmingham and at other campuses, which was a fun experience. It was great to see our ideas come to life and it feels truly fulfilling to be part of the success of the event.
As for future goals, in five years’ time, I see myself as an established author and businessman in the UK. In the next five after that, I plan to publish even more novels and expand Scissorz Xhrist to serve African diasporas in communities across Europe, North America and beyond. After a decade, I hope to be a leading writer of Afro-futuristic fiction and a renowned keynote speaker on African history, fashion and philosophy. I also look forward to expanding Scissorz Xhrist to other non-African diaspora communities including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other regions.
My advice to other students looking at a similar career path as me is to take the leap of faith and study business if it calls to you. There are lots of job opportunities and entrepreneurial prospects available in the UK. The University’s Business School is truly equipped to prepare you to achieve your career goals.
