My Clearing experience: An interview with Jessica White

Current ULaw student Jessica White is studying the LLB Law at our Leeds campus. After deciding her original university choices were too far away from home, she chose to join us as we were closer to home and provided the course she wanted. We caught up with Jessica to get her advice for students applying through Clearing and to see how she’s enjoyed her first year with us.

I came to ULaw through Clearing really unexpectedly. I had my heart set on going to a university which was quite far away from home and I knew deep down that this probably wasn’t the best choice for me but I carried on applying to universities in different locations all over the country anyway. When I realised that I wanted to change my university to one nearer home, I went through the Clearing process on results day. The process ran so smoothly and I couldn’t have had a better experience. I went to see my schools career advisor and she told me about all of the great opportunities that ULaw had to offer and I instantly knew that I had to call. When I was on the phone to ULaw, I was speaking to a student who came through Clearing themselves and he really put me at ease. After a quick conversation, I was enrolled on to the course of my choice.

I didn’t research ULaw until a few days before Clearing. I read about the course online and gained lots of information that made me very interested. It also offered LLB Law with Criminology which is what I originally enrolled on before changing to straight LLB Law half way through my second year. This is purely because I loved the law modules so much in my first year and I really wanted to continue studying them. I was also attracted to ULaw’s employability services. I use a lot of their services and get involved in lots of pro-bono work that they have to offer.

I was really quite unprepared for applying through Clearing which is why I think it would have been so useful to have made a plan beforehand. I made the day a lot more stressful for myself by not having an action plan. However, when I called ULaw they made the process very easy.

I had a lot of interaction with ULaw throughout the process. On the day of Clearing I was told that I was accepted on the phone, which was an instant relief. I was then sent email confirmation and within a few days I had a welcome pack delivered to my house. The communication from the University was excellent, especially coming up to the start date of my course. I had lots of questions which I emailed to the specific department and I always had very quick and thorough replies.

The speed at which everything was dealt with made the process very smooth and stress-free. I also particularly liked that when I called the ULaw I was on the phone to a student who came through Clearing themselves.

Looking back, coming through Clearing was the best option for me. It has worked out much better than I could have imagined and I am so happy that I came through clearing. I am very pleased that I ended up at ULaw, it is such a great University and it is absolutely perfect for my needs and studies.

Since starting the course, I am particularly proud of the exam results that I have achieved. I am also proud to have been part of a lot of Pro-Bono schemes and obtaining work experience in multiple city firms.

In the future I am planning on graduating from my LLB Law degree, then studying the LPC at ULaw. I then hope to obtain a training contract and qualify as a solicitor.
