Talk us through your experience.
Before joining the University, I gained over 15 years of academic and professional experience in cybersecurity, data management and IT systems across several UK and overseas universities. This has included leadership roles, extensive teaching and research, and curriculum design. Alongside academia, I have also contributed to industry-focused projects and collaborative schemes that connect research, practice and education. This blend of experience allows me to bring global perspectives and practical insights into my teaching.
What sparked the decision to go into teaching?
My teaching journey began in 2001 at Portsmouth College, where I taught basic IT skills to a group of refugees. That experience showed me how education can transform lives and help people rebuild their futures. It ignited my passion for teaching and my belief that education should inspire people to grow, lead and contribute to their communities.
How did you find yourself working at the University?
I was looking for a place where I could make a difference to students’ futures. The University stood out for its professional focus and commitment to students. What attracted me most was the opportunity to help shape the growing cybersecurity offering at the Manchester campus and to support students in developing skills that connect directly to industry needs. Joining the University felt like the right step to continue my journey of empowering students to become confident professionals and future leaders.
Can you tell us about someone who made a lasting impact on your journey?
Professor Waqar Ahmed has had a profound influence on my journey. His guidance encouraged me to pursue ambitious research while always keeping sight of practical application. His mentorship strengthened my academic confidence and shaped the direction of my career.
What achievements are you most proud of?
One of the achievements I am most proud of is being awarded PFHEA (Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy) by Advance HE. This recognition reflects my ongoing contribution to higher education. Particularly, my commitment to lead innovation in teaching and support the professional growth of others. It marks a milestone in my career, highlighting my dedication to students, staff and the wider academic community.
What experience has made you feel the most rewarded and inspired by teaching?
I developed SPARK (Student-ed, Problem-solving, Application, Real-world integration and Knowledge creation) to develop student-led cybersecurity learning. A particularly rewarding moment is watching my students engage with the framework. Their enthusiasm and creativity are truly inspiring.
What keeps you passionate about your role in The University of Law?
The collaborative culture across campuses and the strong focus on student employability keep me motivated. The University offers space for innovation, whether in teaching, simulation or student-staff research partnerships. I also enjoy watching students move from uncertainty to confidence, gradually taking lead in discussions, challenging assumptions and applying knowledge independently.
How would you describe your teaching style?
I would describe my style as collaborative and applied. I encourage active participation, real-world problem-solving and critical reflection. My goal is for students to leave with confidence, employable skills and the ability to think strategically about complex problems.
What can students expect in your classroom?
Engaging discussions, practical case studies and opportunities to test their thinking against realistic scenarios. They can also expect a supportive environment where their contributions are valued.
What advice would you like to give to students?
Be engaged, embrace challenges and never be afraid to ask questions. University is more than just absorbing information. It is about developing confidence, critical thinking and the skills that will prepare you to thrive both professionally and personally.
