The University of Law welcomes Lord Neuberger as its new Chancellor

Former President of the Supreme Court joins The University of Law

4 September 2018

The University of Law (ULaw) has today announced the appointment of David, Lord Neuberger, former President of the Supreme Court, as its new Chancellor.

Professor Andrea Nollent, Vice-Chancellor and CEO of ULaw, said: “I am honoured to welcome Lord Neuberger as our Chancellor. His exceptional experience and exemplary career will provide inspiration to our students.”

As Chancellor, Lord Neuberger, more formally The Right Honourable The Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury, will represent the University and provide professional and academic insight as an expert in the legal world. He will preside over graduation ceremonies and will formally award degrees to University graduates.

Called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1974, Lord Neuberger became Queen’s Counsel in 1987 and received a knighthood in 1996 when he became a judge.  He was made a life peer as Baron Neuberger of Abbotsbury in 2007. He became President of the Supreme Court in October 2012, overseeing some of the UK’s most high-profile cases, before retiring from the role in September 2017.

Lord Neuberger succeeds Dame Fiona Woolf who was appointed as inaugural Chancellor in 2013, a year after the College of Law gained university status in 2012. Dame Fiona was a former Lord Mayor of London and President of the Law Society of England and Wales.

Professor Andrea Nollent said: “The University of Law is delighted to benefit from the tremendous knowledge and experience that Lord Neuberger has developed and applied throughout his career. We are also deeply grateful to Dame Fiona Woolf for her inspiration and guidance over the last five years.

“At The University of Law we are wholly committed to improving and broadening outcomes for our students, through our academic offer and expert leadership. Under Lord Neuberger’s Chancellorship, we will further develop our position within the education sector to benefit both our students and our professional partners.”

A celebration event to formally welcome Lord Neuberger into his new role at ULaw will be held later in the year.
