• Burges Salmon Becomes Latest Bristol-Based Law Firm to Announce Training Partnership with College of Law

  • 30 March 2011

  • Leading law firm Burges Salmon has signed a training agreement with the UK’s top provider of professional legal education, The College of Law.

The commercial law firm, which is headquartered in Bristol, has appointed the College as a preferred provider of the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and the Legal Practice Course (LPC) for its future trainees.

Burges Salmon is the fourth Bristol-based law firm to sign a training deal with The College of Law since it opened its new centre in the city in 2010.

From September 2011 those of Burges Salmon’s future trainees based outside Bristol will study exclusively with the College, at one of its eight centres nationwide.

The firm has also named The College of Law as one of its two preferred providers of the GDL and LPC for its Bristol-based trainees.

Burges Salmon is consistently ranked amongst the UK's most successful commercial law firms. Its national and international client base ranges from private individuals to government departments and FTSE 100 companies, such as Barclays, The Crown Estate, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and FirstGroup. With 66 partners and over 600 employees, the firm is widely recognised for the quality of its expertise in a range of areas, including corporate, commercial, litigation, property and tax & trusts.

The firm takes on up to 25 trainees per year and offers up to 40 places on its summer Vacation Placements.

The firm has already formed a close working relationship with the College’s Bristol centre. Representatives from the firm attended the centre’s launch event and a group of its trainees gave a presentation to help students understand the law firm recruitment process. A Burges Salmon trainee also recently acted as a ‘dragon’ in a Dragon’s Den–style challenge undertaken by College students to raise £10,000 for The Prince’s Trust.

Burges Salmon people partner, Helen Scott-Lawler, said: “We are delighted that The College of Law has become one of our preferred LPC providers. The new College of Law centre in Bristol is a fantastic addition to the city and already has an outstanding reputation. We feel confident that the first-class legal training provided by The College of Law will give our future trainees the best start to their career."

At the LPC stage Burges Salmon’s trainees will undertake the College’s unique corporate study route to reflect the firm’s commercial focus. The College’s training methods are practice-based and lay great emphasis on addressing the commercial realities of today’s legal environment.

Nigel Savage, Chief Executive of The College of Law, said: “We are delighted to be entering into a partnership with Burges Salmon, a law firm which has risen to become one of the most respected and professional commercial firms in the country and with which the College already enjoys close collaboration.

“This new agreement is a further sign of The College of Law’s significant impact on the Bristol legal education market since we opened our new Bristol centre last year."

The College of Law is the leading provider of professional legal education and training in Europe and also has centres in London, Birmingham, Chester, Guildford, Manchester and York.
