    19 December 2008

Current Birmingham Young Professional of the Year Anthony McCourt returned to his former law college in the city to help the next generation of professionals make their first steps onto the career ladder.

Anthony spoke to students at The College of Law about how to make the most of their time as a young professional in Birmingham, what employers look for when students apply and his experiences of achieving a training contract with a law firm.

At 25, he was the youngest ever winner of the BYPY award and now works for law firm Wragge & Co, based on Colmore Row in the city centre. He completed his Legal Practice Course (LPC) with the College in 2005 after gaining an LL.B law degree at the University of Birmingham.

"I was delighted to be welcomed back to the College of Law,” he said. “I had a brilliant year there doing my LPC and made some great friends from many different backgrounds.

“The College of Law offers ways to start getting to know the professional community of the city. Winning BYPY was a huge privilege and I was only too delighted to chat through some of my experiences thus far with the students.”

Bernardette Griffin, Regional Director of the College, said: “Having somebody like Anthony come and talk to the students gives them valuable insight into how they can get a foothold in the legal profession and will hopefully inspire them to go on and achieve great things themselves.”
