The MBA International Law is ideal for those looking to develop an understanding of law while building their knowledge of the key strategic aspects of business. This course enables students to enhance their career by equipping them with advanced knowledge of management practices and leadership.

The programme takes place 100% online and is designed to support and enhance professional insights and build a network of academics, business professionals, fellow students, professional bodies and alumni.  Students will develop both the knowledge and skills required to accelerate their career. High quality teaching combined with practical learning ensures that students are able to apply this new knowledge. The programme delivers learning through a variety of methods from online seminars, workshops, tests and presentations, debates, group work, and role play.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

This course has been developed for business or legal professionals who are looking to advance in their current role or enhance their career to progress into senior management roles.

Building on the expertise and heritage of The University of Law, this course is suitable for individuals who may wish to develop an understanding of law from a cross-border transaction perspective while developing their knowledge of the key strategic aspects of business.


COURSE CONTENT AND STRUCTURE 

Online students can choose to study the course full-time over one year or part-time over two years.  

STARTER BOOTCAMP

The course starts with the Starter Bootcamp. During this week students will hone their transferable skills of developing networks, teamwork, knowledge management and cultural management. Key academic skills will also be developed such as referencing, other anti-plagiarism activities, research and presentation skills.

Our coaching philosophy will be introduced where you’ll develop coaching skills and learn how to utilise coaching feedback. 

The independent student led project will also be introduced.

The week will conclude with individual student presentations outlining the knowledge you’ve acquired during the Starter Bootcamp.

International Residential Trip

The International Residential Trip is optional and serves to strengthen the international dimension of the programme with access to international partners and businesses. The cost of this will be approximately £1,500 to be paid for by students. The week-long trip focuses on applying and evaluating the theory gained on the course through a live case study. Students will develop their strategic management, analytical and consulting skills.  This will also be an opportunity to meet other MBA students from other campuses and partner institutions. 

Online and on campus students not wishing to undertake the International Residential Trip will undertake company visits through engagement with online companies.  Online students will also have the option of attending physical residential and company visits if desired. Key aspects of physical residential and company visits will also be shared with online students via webinars and videos.

There are two elective modules to choose from, of which you’ll need to pick one:

  • International Commercial Law (30)
  • International Arbitration Practice (30) 

CORE MODULES

GLOBAL BUSINESS STRATEGY AND LEADERSHIP  

This module will teach you about global corporate strategy and leadership, increasing your confidence in planning and executing strategic changes, taking ethical factors into account. You will also become equipped with a critical understanding of the relevant concepts, theories and frameworks that will enable you to develop your competence in leadership and strategic decision making. This module focuses on the positioning of and solutions for improving competitive strategy in a global context.

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT 

This module will enable you to critically evaluate core theories, models and concepts of leadership. In addition you will learn the best practices and skills used in a professional environment, focusing on how to become an effective human resource practitioner using practical leadership skills.  You will develop an understanding of how competitive advantage for organisations can be gained through developing people in practice; performance management; managing talent; change management and the role of HR analytics in supporting development and performance management.

BUSINESS OPERATIONS AND PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT 

This module will develop your understanding of operations and performance management. You will be able to critically evaluate the effects of the growing influence of a global economy and its effect on performance and operations management of multinational companies. You will learn how to analyse the principles and trends in performance measurement and control.  You will develop an understanding of how the operations and IT functions contribute to an organisation’s competitiveness, strategic direction and change management. 

RESEARCH METHODS, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND DISSERTATION/PROJECT 

Here, you will critically evaluate a business issue of your choice. The module will equip you with the methods, techniques and skills of research to enable you to identify a complex business issue within a professional environment. You will then have the opportunity to plan, execute and analyse the research results in order to document your work. Students have the choice to work on a research dissertation or practice focused project which could include documentary. This project demands rigorous research, analysis and academic interpretation to maximise knowledge in the relevant field.

LAW MODULES

You will select one of the following two elective modules:

INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION PRACTICE  

This module teaches the fundamentals and structure of international arbitration practice. It covers the arbitration agreement, commencing proceedings, the arbitral tribunal, the award and the costs of the arbitration. The procedures for, and benefits of, resolving claims by arbitration – with an emphasis on client-focused commercial advice and practical problem solving. Students will gain a thorough grounding in the principles of arbitration law, including the rules of major international arbitration institutions, such as the ICC, LMIA, UNCITRAL and the IBA guidelines on conflict of interest and taking evidence in international arbitration. You will examine key pieces of domestic arbitration law in England and Wales such as the Arbitration Act 1996.

INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL LAW  

This module considers the key aspects of the law relating to international sales, concentrating on issues common to the most important jurisdictions and the differences between them. You will examine common rules and the standards of international sales. The module will enable you to understand the regulations governing the seller’s principal obligations in the UK, US and other international conventions. You’ll learn what’s involved in excluding liability and look at vendor financing and differences in approach to retention of title under UK and German law. You will also study international shipping terms, the financing of international sales and EU regulation of electronic commerce and commercial agency. 


ONLINE STUDY

HOW WILL YOU LEARN

The online programme is delivered in an interactive way with a real-world focus. Students will be provided with online lectures and workshops for each module. There will be interactive activities, with other students, and business tasks to complete. You will be supported by academic staff in undertaking activities and tasks. To prepare for these tasks, students will be directed to a range of electronic learning resources including e-books, professional body resources, the FT and online databases.

You are expected to actively engage with your tutors, other students, discussion boards and in group work. The MBA is complemented with a Starter Bootcamp, which consists of online masterclasses and coaching sessions.  

Learning is further supported by online resources, including the Financial Times, case studies, simulations, learning videos, reading materials, online testing and feedback.

FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME OPTIONS

The one year online full-time course is fast paced and designed for students who can commit at least 15-30 hours of study per week. Many students work and for those combining study and work you need to be aware that for each module there may be up to 2 tasks to complete in any one week. Modules are undertaken two at a time with a short break in between each module to allow final assessments to be completed.

There is also the opportunity to undertake the online course part-time over two years where you will be required to commit at least 10-20 hours of study per week. Via this route, modules are undertaken one at a time with a break between each.

ASSESSMENT

The assessments are designed to meet the learning outcomes both academically and professionally. Progress on the course will be assessed in a variety of methods such as coursework, exams, group presentations, debates, learning journals and portfolios, individual oral assessment, and research dissertation. Throughout the course students will undertake various work tasks and will be provided feedback upon their work to understand how they are performing. These assessments will mainly take place through online seminars, tutorials, group activities, self-reflection, diagnostic testing and oral presentations.

STUDY MATERIALS AND ONLINE SUPPORT

Students will receive their course materials free of charge. In addition, you will have access to our online library facilities and learning resources through the Financial Times and those from the Chartered Management Institute. These resources provide a range of professional and business-based materials that represent live or most up to date market trends, sector-based articles and analysis reports. Students are allocated a subject supervisor for each subject, who provides feedback on submitted work.
