JILL HOWELL-WILLIAMS

Campus Dean and Associate Professor

Jill studied law at the University of Bristol and is a dual qualified barrister and solicitor. She qualified at Charles Russell, specialising in mergers and acquisitions before joining ULaw in 1997. Jill has extensive experience of teaching postgraduate courses and authored the student text book “Acquisitions and Group Structures”. Appointed Campus Dean in 2016, Jill launched the Legal Tech Hub in 2019, working closely with the University’s Legal Technology Research Academy – ULTRA.

Mary Medyckyj

Head of Tutors

Mary has a BSc in Biology from Manchester University and an LLM from Bristol University. She qualified at Mishcon de Reya and worked at Bird & Bird, specialising in Intellectual Property, before moving to Mewburn Ellis. Mary also set up her own legal practice specialising in Intellectual Property and worked at Charles Russell. Mary is also Scottish qualified, a qualified mediator and a magistrate. She teaches on the Intellectual Property elective of the LPC.

Gareth Richards

LPC Programme & Student Lead

Gareth studied history at Cambridge University before converting to law at ULaw in London. He trained and qualified as a solicitor at Linklaters, specialising in commercial property, planning and environmental law, before moving into legal education in 1997. He's taught on the GDL, LPC, PSC and Master's courses and been involved in designing LPC modules. In his time at the University, he's held a number of management roles and heads up the LPC at Moorgate.

Aruna Verma 

GDL and MA Law Programme & Student Lead

Aruna holds an LLB Hons and studied her LPC at ULaw in Guildford. She began teaching in 2008 as a visiting lecturer whilst she maintained her practice. She initially taught on the BVC (now BPTC) before expanding onto the LPC and GDL. She teaches criminal litigation and ethics on the BPTC, dispute resolution and advanced crime on the LPC, and criminal law and ethics on the GDL.

Rob Foxall

Academic Manager and Associate Professor

Rob has an MA in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford. He studied for the Law Society Finals at Manchester Polytechnic and trained as a solicitor at the City firm of Lewis Silkin. He has practised in a number of regional firms across the South East, working in Real Estate (residential and commercial) and Private Client. Rob joined The University of Law in 2007, teaching Equity & Trusts on the GDL and Real Estate and Private Client on the LPC.

Dipa Mandal

Academic Manager and Senior Tutor

Dipa studied her LLB at the University of Warwick and the LPC at the Bloomsbury Campus of The University of Law. She trained and qualified as a solicitor at Charles Russell LLP, London and also worked at Cripps Harries Hall LLP until she moved into legal education. Dipa has extensive teaching experience on the LPC, GDL and Master's courses. She teaches Business Law and Practice, Public Companies and Equity Finance, Law and Business, and Equity law.

Malcolm Roger

Academic Manager and Senior Tutor

Malcolm has an LLB from the University of Hull where he won the Lewenstein Prize before completing his Law Society Finals at ULaw's Guildford Campus. He trained and qualified as a solicitor at Maples Teesdale in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. Malcolm joined the University in 2008 and was appointed Senior Tutor in 2014. He teaches EU Law on the GDL and Dispute Resolution, Employment Law and Commercial Law on the LPC. He became an Academic Manager in 2016.

Alex Laski

Senior Tutor

Alex studied Modern Languages at Cambridge and Performance Arts at Middlesex. He then studied for an M.Phil (by research) in Cultural Studies at the University of Birmingham. Alex completed the CPE and LPC at MMU and qualified as a solicitor at Addleshaw Goddard. Alex worked for Chambers Legal Directory before moving into education. He teaches Business Law and International Commercial Law on the LPC and EU Law and Law of Organisations on the GDL.

Alexis Mavrikakis

Senior Tutor

Alexis studied law at the University of Cambridge, obtaining a BA (Hons) and MA before training and qualifying at Clifford Chance. Alexis has taught a wide range of subjects on the GDL and LPC for over 20 years. He has developed, written and delivered a many courses for the LPC and has co-developed and delivered a new tutor training programme. Alexis is the principal author of the CLP textbook “Business Law and Practice” and sole author of “Public Companies and Equity Finance”.

Alla Konnikov

Senior Tutor and Associate Professor

Alla studied International Relations and Psychology (Hon) and MSc in Psychology (Hon) at Columbia University, NY, USA before completing her law qualifications at ULaw. Alla trained and qualified at Clifford Chance and then worked for Merrill Lynch. Alla joined ULaw in 2006 and has taught and designed on the LPC, GDL and Master's courses. She designed and teaches the Law and Business module and teaches Business Law and Practice, and Public Companies.

Amy Stirling

Senior Tutor

Amy studied law at Kings College London before taking her LPC at The University of Law. She trained and qualified at Dawsons LLP (now Penningtons Manches LLP) where she acquired broad and extensive experience in both commercial dispute resolution and contentious employment practice before moving into legal education. Amy teaches Dispute Resolution, Employment Law and Practice and Commercial Dispute Resolution on the LPC and Tort on the GDL.

Andrew Strong

Senior Tutor

Andrew took an MA (Hons) in French and Spanish from the University of Cambridge (Clare College). After graduating, he studied the GDL and LPC at ULaw. Andrew trained and qualified at Walker Morris in Leeds, specialising in employment law. After a spell with Thrings in London, Andrew moved into legal education. He now teaches Dispute Resolution and Employment Law and Practice on the LPC. He is course leader on the Part-time evening LPC at the Moorgate Campus.

Anna Elmirzayeva

Senior Tutor and ULTRA member

Anna is from Ukraine where she gained a BA in International Relations and a Master's in International Law. She has an LLM in European law, a PhD in Law from University of Essex, and completed the Oxford Blockchain strategy programme at Said Business School. Anna teaches EU on the GDL and is developing a module on AI and Blockchain for the MSc in Legal Technology. She is a member of the University’s legal tech research academy ULTRA.

Beatrice Roxburgh

Tutor

Beatrice joined ULaw in March 2018, after practising as a senior competition lawyer at Linklaters, then at Lovells, where she advised major corporates, governments and public bodies on European and UK anti-trust law. She then joined the UK’s competition law authority, overseeing dawn raids and investigations. Beatrice spent 15 years as senior in-house competition counsel with BT Group plc. Beatrice is the module lead for the Competition Law and Practice course.

Cemile Cakir

Senior tutor, Teaching Fellow and member of ULTRA

Cemile has an LLB in Law from the London School of Economics and is completing her MA in Education and Technology at the University College London Institute of Education. She's practised in Legal Aid and Property Law. Cemile teaches Public Law, Criminal Law and Land Law on the GDL, and Real Estate, Banking Debt Finance and Immigration on the LPC. She also specialises in legal technology, leading the ULTRA project implementing the introduction of legal tech education.

Claire Kistner

Tutor

Claire has an LLB (Hons) in Law from the University of Leicester and studied the LPC at ULaw's Guildford Campus. She trained and qualified as a solicitor at Hammonds and worked in banking and debt finance both here in the UK and overseas. She became a Senior Associate at a top Australian law firm and also worked as a Director at Australia and New Zealand Bank until she moved into legal education. Claire teaches Business Law and Banking & Debt Finance on the LPC.

Daniel Cowan

Senior Tutor and Associate Professor

Daniel studied mathematics at the University of Nottingham before becoming a solicitor in London. He trained at Bristows before joining the Dispute Resolution department at Russell-Cooke. Daniel teaches Dispute Resolution on the LPC and Contract Law on the GDL. He acts as a Module Lead for LPC Dispute Resolution, contributing to the design and maintenance of that course. Dan is also the Course Leader for the LLM programmes delivered at Moorgate.

Daniela Saretti

Senior Tutor

Daniela Saretti is a dual qualified solicitor. She studied law at the University of Bari, Italy. She trained and qualified in Italy, practising corporate and commercial law at CMS Adonnino Ascoli Cavasola Scamoni. Daniela gained experience in England at Radcliffes Le Brasseur and GlaxoSmithKline, completing the QLTT at ULaw in 2005. Daniela teaches EU Law on the GDL and Introduction to Professional Practice and Commercial Law on the LPC.

Elizabeth Lyus

Senior Tutor

Elizabeth has a BA in History from the University of Leicester and completed the Law Society Finals at ULaw. She trained and qualified at DJ Freeman before working at Cripps Harries Hall, advising on professional negligence claims. Elizabeth teaches tort on the GDL, manages the GDL tutor team and jointly manages the LPC Advocacy Course. She teaches Drafting, Dispute Resolution, Advocacy and Commercial Law. She also teaches Commercial Law on the LLM.

Emma Bertuzzi

Senior Tutor and Teaching Fellow

Emma studied law at the University of Manchester. She trained and qualified as a solicitor at Ince & Co, specialising in litigating and arbitrating shipping disputes, acting for ship owners in several high profile major pollution incidents. Emma teaches Dispute Resolution, Commercial Dispute Resolution and Advocacy, International Arbitration and Insurance on the LPC as well as Criminal Law on the GDL. Emma is Course Leader on the Accelerated LPC.

Evy Sandhu

Senior Tutor

Evy has an LLB in Law from Queen Mary University of London and studied for the LPC at ULaw. She trained and qualified at Philip Ross Solicitors and was part of the Commercial Real Estate team working on large development and high end commercial rental projects, until she moved into legal education. Evy teaches EU Law and Public Law on the GDL as well as Real Estate, Debt Finance, Family Law and Practice on the LPC.

Harriet Payter

Senior Tutor and Teaching Fellow

Harriet has an LLB from the University of Bristol and a Postgraduate Legal Diploma from the University of Birmingham. She trained and qualified at Russell Jones & Walker (now Slater Gordon) before practising in high value clinical negligence and personal injury litigation at Bindmans. Harriet teaches tort on the GDL and dispute resolution, clinical negligence and commercial law on the LPC. Harriet was recently appointed Joint Head of Advocacy at Moorgate.

Helen Dyer

Tutor

Helen has a law degree from the University of East Anglia. She studied for the Law Society Finals at ULaw and then worked in private practice for 25 years. For her last 12 years in private practice Helen was a partner in DLA Piper’s banking team, specialising in real estate finance. Helen teaches Equity and Trusts on the GDL and Real Estate and Debt Finance on the LPC. Helen is the module lead for Banking and Debt Finance.

Jessica Bull-Kumar

Tutor

Jessica read law at Cambridge University and completed the BCL with Distinction at Oxford University. After working as editor of a series of law reports, Jessica trained as a barrister. She is a former member of New Square Chambers where she had a general commercial chancery practice, with a particular emphasis on company and insolvency work. Jessica teaches contract law on the GDL.

Joanna Webster

Tutor

Joanna trained and qualified at global law firm Clyde & Co. She specialised in international commercial litigation, intellectual property and property disputes with a particular focus on the aviation, security and technology sectors. She has a BSc in Psychology from the University of Exeter and studied the GDL and LPC at ULaw. Joanna joined The University of Law in August 2017 and teaches Dispute Resolution and Commercial Law on the LPC and Contract Law on the GDL.

John Van Issum

Senior Tutor and Associate Professor

John joined ULaw in 1999 as a qualified barrister. He is interested in legal pedagogy and furthering liberal education and professional skills in a legal vocational training environment. He has taught on the BPTC, LPC, GDL and LLB and was the BPTC’s civil team leader from 2005 to 2013 and Acting Head of BPTC in 2010. His interests include civil procedure, dispute resolution, mediation, ethics and skills training in advocacy, conference and drafting.

Karen Watts

Karen Watts is the Course Leader for MA Law at the Moorgate Campus. She is also the Team Leader for Commercial Dispute Resolution and Advocacy. Karen qualified as a solicitor in 2003 and worked exclusively for City firms, specialising in civil and commercial litigation for insurers. Karen has taught on the LPC, GDL and MA Law, where she delivers Public Law programmes as well as the Legal Research and Independent Project module.

Leona Mason

Senior Tutor

Leona studied law at the University of Sheffield before attending The University of Law’s Chester Campus to qualify as a solicitor. Leona worked for many years in practice, latterly as a partner in Underwood Solicitors LLP, specialising in property finance and secured lending. She joined ULaw in 2006 and teaches Real Estate, Advanced Real Estate, International Capital Markets and Loans Practice on the LPC and Land Law on the GDL.

Lisa Rawcliffe

Lisa studied law at the University of Leicester and is qualified as a solicitor. She worked in private practice in East Anglia and became a visiting lecturer with the University in 2002. Lisa joined as a full-time tutor in 2003 and has taught on the LPC, GDL and LLB. Lynn Smith

Senior Tutor and Associate Professor

Lynn is the Module Lead for Advanced Real Estate and Real Estate Team Leader for Moorgate. Marie qualified as a solicitor after studying at The University of Law's Guildford Campus. She passed the Law Society finals with first class honours. Mike Butler

Tutor and member of ULTRA

Mike studied law and history in Auckland and started work as a solicitor at a leading New Zealand firm. He came to London in the 1990s, joining McKenna & Co (now CMS) before becoming an IP Partner at Squire Patton Boggs (previously Hammonds). He was the general counsel and head of compliance for Parabis Law. Mike teaches on all programmes: Ethics and Law of Organisations (GDL), Intellectual Property and Law and Business (LPC) and English Legal System and Business Structures (LLM).

Natalie McGibbon

Senior Tutor

Natalie trained as a solicitor at Clifford Chance and practised in one of their Commercial Real Estate departments. She joined ULaw in 2007, teaching Property Law and Practice on the LPC, then moved to Singapore for two years where she worked as a Knowledge Management lawyer at Allen and Gledhill. She continued to work on design projects for the University remotely. Natalie returned to the UK in 2010 and now teaches Business Law and Practice and Banking on the LPC.

Nicola Tager

Tutor

Nicola practised for over a decade as an Employment Law Solicitor. She trained and qualified at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. She moved to Harbottle & Lewis LLP in 2008, where she worked on a broad range of contentious and non-contentious matters, representing both employers and employees, joining ULaw in 2017. Nicola is a member of the Employment Lawyers’ Association Training Committee and teaches Business Law and Practice and Employment Law on the LPC.

Paul is a solicitor with many years of City experience in practice. His specialism is insolvency and restructuring. He worked most recently at Eversheds Sutherland as a partner and national head of the restructuring team. Prior to Eversheds, Paul had worked at Wilde Sapte (now Dentons) and DLA Piper. Paul is teaching Business Law and Practice and Mergers and Acquisitions on the LPC.

Peter Watson

Peter has an MA in Classics from the University of Oxford. He studied law at ULaw and achieved the highest mark of his year in Part 1. He trained and qualified as a solicitor at Biddle & Co. (now Pinsent Masons), becoming a partner two years after qualifying. Peter worked in Real Estate and became head of the Property Department. He joined ULaw in 2004 and teaches Land Law on the GDL and Real Estate and Public Companies Law and Practice on the LPC.

Sarah Hargrave

Senior Tutor

Sarah is the Course Leader for the January start LPC. She has a BA in Law & Criminology from the University of Sheffield and trained and qualified at Clyde & Co, specialising in insurance and reinsurance litigation. Sarah initially joined ULaw in 2008, returned to practice at Clyde & Co for a number of years, then re-joined the University in 2016. Sarah currently teaches Dispute Resolution and Insurance Law on the LPC and Contract Law and Criminal Law on the GDL.

Shehnaz Varda

Senior Tutor and Teaching Fellow

Shehnaz has an LLB from Queen Mary University, London and studied the LPC at ULaw. She trained and qualified as a solicitor at Wilde Sapte (now known as Dentons) and worked in shipping finance and banking before moving into legal education. Shehnaz teaches Tort on the GDL as well as Business Law and Debt Finance on the LPC. She has also taught Islamic Finance on the Banking Finance Training Consortium.

Shireen Nakhuda

Shireen graduated with a First Class Honours LLB Law degree from Queen Mary University of London and studied the LPC at ULaw. Simon George

Simon studied law at the University of Oxford and qualified after training at Halliwells. He moved to Pinsent Masons' banking department and entered legal education at ULaw in 2006. Simon has been involved with key clients of the University since 2006, teaching Business Law and Practice, Banking and Debt Finance and Law and Business on the LPC. He also specialises in legal technology and leads the University project group ULTRA.

Timothy has an LLB from Kings College London.
