• College of Law extends trainee solicitor course to Bristol centre

  • 7 September 2011

  • The College of Law is to begin running the Professional Skills Course (PSC), a compulsory course for trainee solicitors, at its new Bristol centre for the first time this month.

The PSC, which is undertaken during the two-year training contract with a law firm or other organisation and forms the final part of training before qualification, will be available at the Temple Circus centre from September.

Already running at its seven other centres across the UK, the College’s PSC has recently been revamped to give trainee solicitors even better preparation for practice in the modern world of law.

Through its new Business of Law programme, the PSC now identifies the core competencies required for a successful legal career and clearly shows how they are developed throughout the course. It helps trainees to focus on the skills most valued by law firms and relate what they have learnt in the classroom to what will be expected of them in the real world of legal practice.

In addition trainees can now choose tailored routes through the course specific to the area of law in which they are working to ensure that their training is as relevant as possible. These are the corporate route, the commercial and private route and the Legal Aid route.

This introduction of a new course to The College of Law’s Bristol centre is the latest chapter in its success story since opening in September 2010. In its first year it attracted nearly 240 students, 26 per cent more than its target figure of 190, and signed training partnership deals with Bristol-based law firms Beachcroft, Burges Salmon, Osborne Clarke and TLT.

Colin Davey, Business Development Director for The College of Law, said: “The College has had a significant impact on the Bristol legal education market since we opened in the city last year. The introduction of our newly revamped PSC at the Bristol centre will continue our work to provide world-class legal training to the South West’s new generation of lawyers, helping to reinforce and build the region’s thriving legal sector.”
