Hundreds of lawyers and law students from across the North got into the competitive spirit at the annual Legal Sports Day held by The University of Law in York on Saturday (April 20), with 35 teams vying for trophies in netball, football and rugby.
Students past and present from the University’s York centre in Bishopthorpe battled teams from Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle universities, The University of Law’s Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol centres and law firms Addleshaw Goddard, Berrymans Lace Mawer, DLA Piper, Kennedys, Pinsent Masons, Squire Sanders and Walker Morris.
Also taking part this year was a netball team made up of employees from Reed Specialist Recruitment, financial services company Walker Crips, Network Rail, Addleshaw Goddard, IT services company Trustmarque and York school Ampleforth College.
Paul Aber, Director of The University of Law, York said: “It was great to welcome back our regular teams and to see a few new ones. We are very happy that the event is so popular and that it is in the sporting calendar for law firms and law students. It’s a great way for everyone to enjoy their sport and have fun while meeting old and new friends and making contacts along the way.
“Of course the event couldn’t go ahead without a considerable amount of hard work put in by staff and students and without the many teams and spectators who take time out to come along and participate in such a fantastic spirit.”
This year’s ‘Football Cup’ winners were Newcastle University School of Law while Walker Morris won the ‘Football Plate’ and Kennedys were named ‘Party Winners’.
In the netball competition a team of alumni from The University of Law Manchester won the ‘Netball Cup’, DLA Piper Sheffield took home the ‘Netball Plate’ and Newcastle University School of Law were presented with the ‘Umpires Award’.

Rossa Keating from the York centre’s rugby team added: “It was a fantastically well organised event, played in great spirits - a fun day for all no matter what your skill level."
Lauren Fisher, trainee solicitor with DLA Piper and member of The University of Law Manchester Alumni team said: "Following last year's downpour it was great to see the sun shining again for this year's ever fantastic sports day. After six years of attending the event, the day just gets better and better and is a huge credit to The University of Law. Great sport, great networking opportunities, great social – I can't wait for the next one!"
