• Irwin Mitchell Launches Innovative Professional Training and Career Development Scheme with College of Law

  • 2 June 2011

  • LEADING national firm Irwin Mitchell is to launch a ground-breaking partnership with The College of Law to offer specially tailored training courses to legal staff at all levels in the firm.

The link up will see enhanced professional training and career development packages offered to employees ranging from paralegal and trainee junior professionals to some of the company’s most senior partners through courses designed to reflect Irwin Mitchell’s specialist legal offerings for both consumer and business clients.

The unique partnership, termed the ‘IMU Law and Business School’, will see representatives from the firm and the College working hand in hand over the next three years to deliver legal training blended with its internal business skills training through a series of structured programmes tailored to the needs of the firm’s professional staff each year at all levels.

With training being delivered online, through The College of Law’s sites in London, Manchester and Birmingham, and at Irwin Mitchell office locations around the country, the scheme will see:

    • Non-law graduates receiving additional training through the ‘IM Graduate Certificate in Legal Practice’
    • around 45 trainee solicitors joining Irwin Mitchell each year working through their Graduate Diploma in Law where needed, Legal Practice Course, and Professional Skills Courses, all tailored to the needs of their practice areas and provided exclusively by The College of Law.
    • a series of professional post-qualification Diploma level courses in Legal Practice introduced, which are divided into specific Personal Injury and Corporate & Commercial streams, as part of an enhanced approach to in-house Continuing Professional Development.
    • a new Irwin Mitchell ‘Masters Level in Legal Management’ aimed at the firm’s Associate and Partner level staff introduced, incorporating modules from The College of Law’s own LLM programme as well as Irwin Mitchell’s own management development programmes.

Additionally, a further relationship has also been brokered with ILEX Tutorial College and ILEX directly to provide an undergraduate “IM Certificate in Legal Practice” so as to provide an alternative route for those in Irwin Mitchell’s non-graduate population who wish to develop their legal career with the firm.

Applications for the first year of the various programmes will begin in May. The firm’s Director of HR & Training, Andy Chalmers said the aim was to bring together the best of Irwin Mitchell’s internal professional and legal education training and The College of Law’s skill and depth of experience to improve further the firm’s offering to clients, together with providing a real sense of career progression.

“This is the first time a national law firm has committed to creating such an innovative programme and the IMU Law & Business School underpins our investment in personal and professional development which is at the very heart of everything we do,” said Chalmers.

“It also demonstrates yet again our commitment to developing innovative new ways of investing in our people and of staying at the forefront of the changes in the legal sector.

“The College of Law is renowned for delivering world-class legal education to all of the profession and is the leading law school in the UK. We see this as the perfect way to bring together the track record we have in developing our legal expertise in-house with bespoke courses which will offer our people access to the very best career development possible with training designed to match the work they do for our clients every day.”

Nigel Savage, Chief Executive of The College of Law, said that the link up brought together two organisations renowned for innovation and commitment to all areas of legal practice and showed that the most talented students could look wider than just City firms when planning their legal careers.

“This partnership builds on the reputation developed by both Irwin Mitchell and The College of Law for being innovators in their field,” he said. “Irwin Mitchell remains at the forefront of the industry by delivering quality service across a broad range of practice areas. The College is similarly renowned for innovation in professional legal education and for providing tailored training for law firms, with specialist programmes for all aspects of practice.

“The comprehensive programme of training for all levels of employees provided by the IMU Law and Business School demonstrates to students that they don’t necessarily need to go to the City for a top class legal career.”
