Hundreds of lawyers and law students from across the north got into the competitive spirit at the annual Legal Sports Day held by The College of Law in York on Saturday (April 2), with 32 teams vying for trophies in netball, football and rugby.
Students past and present from the College’s York centre battled teams from Hull, Leeds and Newcastle universities, the College’s Chester, Manchester and Moorgate centres and law firms DLA Piper, DWF, Addleshaw Goddard, Eversheds, Squire Sanders Hammonds, Pinsent Masons, Irwin Mitchell, Pepperells, Sintons and Walker Morris.
Paul Aber, Centre Director of The College of Law, York said: “It was good to welcome back our regular teams and to see a few new ones. The event is now firmly in the sporting calendar for law firms and law students. It’s a great way for them to enjoy sport and have fun while making new friends and contacts along the way.
“A huge thank you goes to the College staff and students who worked so hard to make the event happen, to the teams, visitors and alumni for taking the time to come and play or spectate and to our sponsors DLA Piper, Wesleyan for Lawyers, Yorkshire Law Society and Your Marquee.”
This year’s ‘Football Cup’ winners were The College of Law, York with DLA Piper, Sheffield as runners up. The College’s Manchester centre won the ‘Football Plate’ and defending title holders DLA Piper, Leeds were runners up.

The Manchester centre also claimed the ‘Netball Cup’ for a second year running with The College of Law ‘Yorkies’ Old Girls team winning the ‘Netball Plate’. Newcastle Student Law Society’s netball team took the Umpires Award for ‘team spirit and sporting play’.

Following a tense rugby final against The College of Law, York home team, Leeds University team ‘The Medics’ finally took the ‘Rugby Cup’ after several years of trying. The team from the College’s London Moorgate centre made their long journey worth it by winning the ‘Rugby Plate’.
Clare Doolan, Graduate Recruitment Assistant for event sponsors DLA Piper, said: “We're thrilled to have been able to take a more active role in the Legal Sports Day this year. As well as being a highly anticipated event for the trainees, many of whom remember their own time at The College of Law, it is also a brilliant opportunity to network and build the links that make the legal community in the North East so strong."
Christopher Graham, captain of Pinsent Masons’ football team and newcomer to the competition, said: “The sports day was a well organised event with a great atmosphere and many firms attending. Overall it was a grand day out!”
James Duffy of DLA Piper, Leeds added that “sport is a great way of networking” while Duncan Love, rugby captain for Hull University Student Law Society summed up the event as “a sensational day”. Stephen Mosses, who played for Irwin Mitchell’s football team, said: "The event was brilliantly organised, fantastically enthusiastic and friendly."
